Educators and students now have a solution that can help them prepare for the more rigorous Common Core State Standards (CCSS) assessments, which will go beyond traditional multiple-choice testing to measure subject mastery at deeper levels. Edmentum, a leading provider of online learning solutions, has enhanced its Study Island test-preparation solution with the addition of nine item types aligned to the CCSS. With a total of 10 item types for testing, Study Island gives educators an industry-leading learning solution that can help students demonstrate a greater depth of understanding in math and English language arts (ELA).

“Common Core represents a major change not only in what students are learning but how they must demonstrate their mastery of it,” said Andy Frost, vice president of product management for Edmentum. “We’ve received a lot of interest from educators who are anxious to have access to tools that will help them prepare students for these Web-based assessments. The Study Island enhancements help ensure that both educators and students get ahead of the curve and are prepared for the more demanding assessments when they arrive.”

The new Study Island item types – such as constructed response, fill-in-the-blank, matched pairs and others – promote higher-order thinking and inquiry. Edmentum applied the CCSS Depth of Knowledge (DoK) guidelines to ensure the item types were written to the correct DoK level and ensure students get exposed to the appropriate content.

The new item types are mobile compatible and align with the CCSS assessments under development by two separate consortia: the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).
