Introduction to Archaeology
Introduction to Archaeology is a one-semester course designed to promote understanding of archaeology as a scientific discipline and professional field. Students will examine the evolution and interdisciplinary nature of archaeology, diverse archaeological methodologies and their applications, and the ethical dimensions of archaeological practice. The course places particular emphasis on cultural responsibilities toward indigenous communities, artifact preservation, and public engagement. In unit activities, students will analyze primary and secondary sources to draw evidence-based conclusions about archaeological sites and cultural practices and investigate and interpret material evidence from past cultures. Students will also design strategies for site protection and public education initiatives and develop a broader appreciation for the role of archaeology in understanding human history.
