Mythology and Folklore

Mythology and Folklore is a one-semester course designed to promote understanding of myths, legends, and folklore from cultures around the world. Students will examine the role of mythology in various cultures, creation and destruction myths, myths related to natural elements and events, and the evolution of folklore and folktales. The course places a particular focus on classical gods and goddesses, epic legends such as the Trojan War and the odyssey of Odysseus, and British legends including King Arthur and Robin Hood. In unit activities, students will analyze the hero cycle and the qualities embodied by heroes across cultures and examine dynastic dramas and love myths involving gods and mortals. Students will also identify the roles of tricksters, monsters, and legendary figures in myths and folklore from around the world.
