Nutrition, Food, and Wellness Certification

Nutrition, Food, and Wellness Certification is a one-semester course designed to introduce students to the concepts of Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA), and MyPlate. The course covers the fundamentals of macronutrients and micronutrients, components of wellness, influences on food choices, and how government agencies regulate the food industry. It also explores foodborne illnesses and how they can be prevented through practices such as good sanitation and proper use of equipment. Students will learn about food science and technology and their roles in enhancing and expanding the food supply. They will gain insight into local and national job opportunities in the food and nutrition industry, particularly in food manufacturing, distribution, and biotechnology. Additionally, students will develop and apply durable skills such as critical thinking, communication, and creativity, as well as character skills like a growth mindset.

This course will prepare students to earn American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences certifications.
