Fundamentals of Human Services A/B
Fundamentals of Human Services is a two-semester course designed to introduce students to the knowledge and skills used by professionals who support people through crisis, grief, and loss. Students will examine crisis intervention models, grief theories, and the psychosocial needs of bereaved individuals, and develop skills in crisis assessment, professional communication, and referral coordination, with a particular focus on community demographics, cultural responsiveness, ethical responsibilities, and career pathways in human services. In unit activities, students will assess crisis situations and apply intervention models, respond to a range of crisis types, including interpersonal violence, suicide risk, trauma, substance use, and health-related crises, and explore career pathways across direct client support, community outreach, specialized services, and program leadership. Students will also examine how grief is experienced by people of different ages, cultures, and life circumstances, study the roles of hospice and palliative care, and learn to recognize complicated grief and navigate ethical responsibilities in grief support.
