Human Growth and Development A/B

Human Growth and Development is a two-semester course designed to trace human development from conception through late adulthood, examining how people grow, think, feel, and connect at every stage of life. Students will explore foundational principles of human development across five domains—physical, cognitive, social/emotional, and language development—and apply major developmental theories to understand what shapes human growth, with a particular focus on health and safety practices, ethical issues in caregiving, and strategies for optimizing development at each stage. They will follow the developmental journey from before birth through the preschool years, examining key milestones and factors that influence early growth. In unit activities, students will continue tracing development from middle childhood and adolescence through early, middle, and late adulthood, evaluating how it unfolds across the full human lifespan. Students will also examine complex ethical issues in human development and apply skills in critical thinking, written communication, and cultural awareness through hands-on activities and projects. They will explore career pathways in human services and early childhood education and develop professional ethics and leadership skills essential for supporting diverse individuals across a range of care settings.
