Introduction to Criminology

Introduction to Criminology is a one-semester course designed to promote understanding of the fundamental theories and concepts related to crime, deviance, and the criminal justice system. Students will examine classical and positivist schools of criminological thought, individual and structural criminological theories, and the societal factors that influence criminal behavior. The course places a particular focus on labeling processes, social inequality, and alternative approaches to criminology, such as peacemaking criminology. In unit activities, students will analyze criminological theories, including routine activity, social learning, and broken windows theory, and evaluate crime prevention strategies and their effectiveness. Students will also synthesize multiple theoretical frameworks to analyze criminal behavior in specific cases and develop a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between society and crime.
