World History & Civilization

World History & Civilization is a two-semester course aligned to the Indiana Academic Standards for World History and Civilization. The course covers prehistory through the modern era, helping students understand how the modern world emerged from processes that began thousands of years ago when humans developed language, mobility, and commerce. Through primary sources, case studies, and research, students investigate the continuity and change of human culture, governments, economic systems, and social structures while connecting specific people, places, events, and ideas to larger historical trends. Students develop historical thinking skills through critical reading, feedback-rich instruction, and application-oriented assignments that build their capacity to reason chronologically, interpret sources, identify connections, and construct well-supported arguments. Writing assignments include journal entries, essays, and visual presentations responding to primary sources and historical narratives, while discussion activities help students defend their positions and respond to others' viewpoints. The course provides rigorous instruction with relevant materials and active learning opportunities to ensure all students can master key historical thinking skills.
