Central Elementary School in Lucedale, Mississippi, will be presented with Edmentum's Rock Star School Award for outstanding performance on October 17, 2018, at 8:00 AM. Edmentum, a leading provider of web-based learning programs, will sponsor a breakfast for faculty members followed by a schoolwide assembly featuring a rock band hosted by Central Elementary School leadership to celebrate the school’s achievement.
"During the summer of 2017, Central Elementary partnered with Edmentum to introduce Study Island, Reading Eggs, and Exact Path to grades K–6; each proved to be a key component in the transformation of our school," explained Zach Bost, principal. "For the first time ever, our perennial middle-of-the-road school leaped from middle of the pack in the district to the frontrunner."
Central Elementary School’s growth from its fall 2017 NWEA™ MAP® Growth™ assessment administration to the winter 2017 administration was near or above the 90th percentile in every subject and grade, and that was just the beginning. Its growth from the previous school year on the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) tests was outstanding as well. The school saw double-digit gains in its overall 3rd through 6th grade math, ELA, and science proficiency on the MAAP assessment. And, on Mississippi's kindergarten readiness assessment, Renaissance® Star Early Literacy®, the school placed in the top 10 percent in the state for overall spring scale scores and growth from fall to spring.
"The success that Central Elementary School has experienced in just one year has been phenomenal," said Edmentum COO Ryan Hagedorn. “We're extremely proud of the gains that Central Elementary School has made. We know that it is the result of the hard work of the faculty, staff, students, and parents, and we're glad we get to support the school’s success."
Central Elementary School's success has also led to it becoming the first A-rated elementary school in George County School District in the history of the current rating system. When principal Zach Bost and assistant principal Sherry Pilkington took over the school leading into the 2017–18 school year, they decided they would do everything they could to transform Central Elementary School through the power of positive energy, fun, and of course, hard work. They started new programs and clubs that made school a place that students wanted to be, and they implemented targeted intervention time every day that ensures that all students receive the small-group and one-on-one instruction needed to be successful.
