Edmentum, a global education leader and a pioneer in online teaching and learning solutions, has announced the winner of its Study Island Chromebook Giveaway: Geiger Elementary School in Ridgeway, South Carolina.

From November 1, 2019, through January 31, 2020, the school of any educator who signed up for and used a Study Island trial account was entered to win a set of 25 Chromebooks. Geiger Elementary School, which was entered in the giveaway when 4th grade teacher Sadie Johnson signed up for a Study Island trial, was randomly selected from over 1,000 schools across 48 states who met the eligibility criteria.

“We are glad that we are able to support the educators and students at Geiger Elementary School as they carry out e-learning and be a source of positivity during these challenging times,” said Ryan Hagedorn, Edmentum chief operating officer. “When we launched this giveaway back in November, we wanted to give back to a deserving school that gave Study Island a try. We had no idea then that in just a few short months all schools would be operating fully online and that the prize would be that much more valuable.”

Edmentum representatives in South Carolina partnered with Dr. Claudia Avery, deputy superintendent of academics at Fairfield County School District, to plan to surprise the principal and staff of Geiger Elementary in person, but when schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that plan was put on hold and eventually rescheduled as a virtual presentation.

On Wednesday, April 22, Geiger Elementary Principal Myra Bramlett joined a Google Hangouts meeting that she thought would be an Edmentum account review. She soon was surprised to learn that her school had won 25 Chromebooks from Edmentum.

“That’s such a bright spot in everything that’s going on; thank you so much,” Principal Bramlett responded when she was told that her school had won the prize. “Anytime you can get additional technology into your school it is always really a great, great, benefit. …All of our students in grades second through sixth currently have Chromebooks checked out to them to use at home for our e-learning…so I would love to be able to filter down to some additional grades like first grade and kindergarten.”

Winning the 25 Chromebooks could not have come at a better time for Geiger Elementary. In early March, Principal Bramlett had planned to purchase additional Chromebooks for her school’s youngest learners, but before the purchase could be finalized, the devices were completely sold out due to increased demand in the wake of COVID-19. Principal Bramlett plans to check out the Chromebooks to students who need them to participate in the school’s blended online learning program.
