Edmentum, a leading provider of online learning solutions, has partnered with Quitman Street Community School in Newark, New Jersey, to implement technology to help drive success for all students. Quitman Street School was considered a low-performing school in the State of New Jersey; however, over the last six years, the school has transformed to be a thriving option for the community of Newark.

Quitman Street School wanted to offer online learning that incorporated rigorous instruction and practice activities to engage and motivate students. “We’re very passionate about student success . . . however we’re also very concerned about making sure we put the right resources around our students,” reported Erskine Glover, Principal at Quitman Street School.

The school embraces blended learning to differentiate instruction and provide individualized learning paths for each student through Study Island and NWEA-MAPS. Study Island’s data-driven standards mastery programs offer self-paced, individualized learning or teacher-led, whole-class instruction. “Study Island can pinpoint difficulties that a child may have and fix those weaknesses, so it can fill in holes that a teacher might not necessarily see,” said Christina Patterson-Bright, parent at Quitman Street School. Teachers can easily guide students through the program, communicate expectations, and create class assignments. Students can work through questions using a standard test format, an interactive game format, printable worksheets, or a classroom response system.

“If a student is not reading on grade level, they no longer have to wait for me to teach them,” said Alicia Wiltshire-King, teacher at Quitman Street School. “Students can learn in the classroom, students can learn afterschool, [or] students can learn at home because technology allows for that.”
