James R. Bilhartz, Jr. Elementary School will be presented with the Rock Star School Award on November 17, 2016, by Edmentum, a leading provider of online learning solutions. The award recognizes schools for their innovative use of technology solutions in the classroom. Bilhartz Elementary uses Edmentum’s Study Island to cater to an educationally diverse student community and to not only exceed state expectations—but to shatter them.

Bilhartz Elementary’s student population consists of over 40 percent of students who have limited English proficiency (LEP) and more than 80 percent of the school’s population receives free or reduced lunch. The greatest needs of a diverse student population is the ability to learn at their own pace. Study Island helps to generate those individualized learning pathways, and students receive the flexibility they need to explore the curriculum and all it has to offer. The staff at Bilhartz Elementary realized that the more time spent with the system, the faster proficiency can be reached.

The success that Bilhartz Elementary has seen since implementing Edmentum have been unprecedented. The school has achieved double-digit gains in every student group and on every measure from 2015–16. Bilhartz Elementary also has earned recognition statewide from the Texas Education Agency by receiving distinctions for Academic Achievement in Mathematics and in the Top 25 Percent Student Progress designation. 

Pamela Wilson, principal at Bilhartz Elementary, explained, “We needed a program that could track student progress as well as individualize instruction for our students’ specific weaknesses. We use Study Island to ensure that each student gets prescriptive lessons based on their individual weaknesses.”
