Muhlenberg North Middle School will be presented the Rock Star School Award on May 26, 2015, by Edmentum, a leading provider of online learning solutions. The school has Edmentum’s Study Island to help transition to the Common Core State Standards and improve student achievement on the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP).

Muhlenberg North Middle School experienced some challenges transitioning to the Common Core State Standards and saw their proficiency levels drop after the start of the K-PREP testing. Although all schools in Kentucky expected some period of adjustment, the rural middle school’s transition was particularly dramatic. They needed a way to gain insight into which students would struggle on the new CCSS tests so they could remediate as necessary.

As a result, they decided to expand their usage of Study Island in order to more closely track student progress throughout the year and increase proficiency in core subject areas. Educators have embraced the program, building it into their tier II intervention strategy and targeting student instruction based on the program’s robust data.

“We use Study Island on all groups of students – novice, apprentice, proficient, and distinguished. We work to get students to move from one level to the next, or higher,” said Kelly Melton, Curriculum Specialist.

From the 2011-12 school year to the 2013-14 school year, the school’s percentile in achievement statewide increased from the 38th percentile to the 86th percentile.  “Our school has seen growth over the past few years, and I believe that our teachers will say that Study Island has helped them prepare our students for the future,” said Melton.
