Tolbert Elementary School will be presented the Rock Star School Award on May 27, 2016, by Edmentum, a leading provider of online learning solutions. The school uses Edmentum’s Study Island to help students build their vocabulary and increase proficiency scores for the Georgia Milestone End-of-Grade assessments.

Tolbert Elementary, in the small town of Resaca, Georgia, has 616 students, with four out of five students coming from economically disadvantaged homes. Fortunately, Tolbert Elementary School has two full-time family involvement coordinators and a Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) that is dedicated to providing the best possible opportunities for students.

The school created a support system for the students called Tribe Tickets that operates as the currency of the school. Students can earn Tribe Tickets for good behavior and grades but also through earning blue ribbons in Study Island. Blue ribbons are earned when students demonstrate mastery on their assignments.

According to Tolbert Elementary School principal Kederia Angland, “It wasn’t until the 2015–16 school year that the county provided us with Study Island.” “Before then, it was our PTO who purchased the product. And what a difference it has made!”

With the implementation of Study Island, Tolbert Elementary School has increased its proficiency scores in every subject tested. In particular, the subjects of science and social studies have been particularly effective. In the 2011–12 school year, more than 25 percent of students were not meeting expectations. Since implementing Study Island in the 2013–14 school year, that number dropped to only 10 percent.
