West Sonoma County Union High School District (WSCUHSD), ranked one of the top 100 school districts in California and located in western Sonoma County, fifty miles north of San Francisco, is taking a fresh approach to summer school this year by partnering with Edmentum, a global education leader and a pioneer in online teaching and learning solutions. For the first time ever, WSCUHSD students will use online curriculam for summer school instead of the traditional packets and textbooks.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Steve Charbonneau, who was instrumental in bringing the program to WSCUHSD, is looking forward to how Edmentum Courseware will benefit the district’s students. "We're really excited that students test into each course—they only have to work on what they don't know. It's based on what they need, so students are empowered to finish faster," said Charbonneau. "Summer school is only the start—we have access to the program for all of our students. Teachers can begin using it as an instructional tool next school year, and students will also use it for independent study. Using an online program will make learning more relevant to today's students and will help them develop the 21st century skills that they will need after they graduate."
WSCUHSD’s teachers drive the district’s high achievement, and they will continue to play a critical role with this new program. With summer school as the kickoff, the rollout of the online curriculum will be gradual, giving teachers time and support to build their expertise with the tool. Teachers will participate in professional development with their Edmentum implementation consultant to learn strategies for bringing together teacher-led instruction and online curriculum to achieve the best outcomes for students. As teachers grow their usage of Edmentum Courseware in their classrooms, they will be able to spend more time working with students one on one and in small groups, providing more individualized learning experiences.
"We are proud to partner with WSCUHSD, and we can't wait to see what the students, teachers, and administrators are able to achieve using Edmentum Courseware," said Ryan Hagedorn, Edmentum’s chief operating officer. “By focusing on instruction that fills learners’ knowledge gaps, Edmentum Courseware provides students with targeted learning experiences to address specific issues that may have prevented them from moving forward in the past.”
