This one-semester course is designed to prepare students for a career in the human services industry. Students get an overview of the wide range of fields within this industry. The course introduces students to childcare and child development by discussing childbirth, postnatal care, the needs of children at different stages of development, issues related to child abuse, and available legal and community resources for individuals and families in need. The course also explores consumer rights. Students also get an understanding of common mental health issues and available mental health services. The course discusses career opportunities in various fields of human services such as mental health, personal care, and agriculture. It also discusses job acquisition and advancement skills. The course appeals to students with different learning styles as it includes activities, discussions, and games.
