Introduction to Philosophy
Introduction to Philosophy is a one-semester course designed to promote understanding of the major branches of philosophy and the key ideas and issues examined within each. Students will explore the contributions of major philosophers and core concepts in metaphysics, epistemology, logic, and the philosophy of art. The course places particular emphasis on value theory, moral systems, theories of God's existence and the problem of evil, and fundamental concepts in social and political philosophy. In unit activities, students will apply the fundamentals of logic and argumentation to evaluate philosophical arguments, assess philosophical theories in real-life and professional contexts, and examine issues in bioethics and in finance and business. Students will also analyze how philosophical inquiry can be applied to questions of ethics, knowledge, and the nature of reality.
