Texas Medical Terminology A/B
Texas Medical Terminology is a one-semester course designed to introduce students to the medical terminology related to human body systems and the professional knowledge essential for health science careers. Students will trace the history of medical terminology, identify the components of medical terms, and interpret medical abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols, with a particular focus on body structure, body planes and cavities, directional terminology, and health science specializations related to each body system. They will also describe the structure, functions, diseases, and disorders of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, endocrine, nervous, lymphatic, and immune systems. In unit activities, students will examine the respiratory, cardiovascular, sensory, reproductive, digestive, and excretory systems and identify medical terminology related to their associated diseases, disorders, procedures, and treatments. Students will also identify common mental health disorders and the medical terminology used in mental health, including related professions, treatments, and procedures. They will apply learning through unit activities that reinforce understanding of body systems, medical terminology, and health science specializations.
