Rethinking Algebra 1 Readiness: Key Predecessor Skills & Exact Path
In this video, Stephanie Gold, Learning Designer at Edmentum, addresses a topic missing from too many conversations about math success: What really prepares students for Algebra 1, and what do we need to rethink to get them there?
Algebra 1 is among the most critical gateway courses a student will take. It’s a predictor of on-time graduation rate, success in higher-level math, and postsecondary success in general. It is also the most failed high school course, and failing Algebra 1 quadruples a student’s chances of dropping out.
TNTP’s “Unlocking Algebra” report asked, “How can we help more students master Algebra 1?” The report confirms something we’ve long understood at Edmentum: Not all prior knowledge is created equal.
General math proficiency doesn’t make the biggest difference in Algebra 1 preparedness. What matters most is whether students have mastered specific math skills from grades 6-8. And when students struggle, they don’t need to relearn every missed concept – just the right ones.
Exact Path is built with these key predecessor skills in mind. It features a coherent, sequenced progression for grades 6-8 designed to teach predecessor skills explicitly and in the right order. With individualized support, each student stays focused on the right concept at the right time.
