The Science of Reading Explained

The science of reading is a large body of research on how children learn to read and which instructional practices lead to stronger literacy outcomes. Drawing on decades of evidence from cognitive science, linguistics, neuroscience, and education, it supports explicit, systematic instruction in the skills students need to decode words, read fluently, and understand text.

As states adopt science of reading laws and schools strengthen their approaches to literacy instruction, educators are looking for practical ways to apply that research. The process begins with five interconnected areas of reading development.

What Are the Five Pillars of the Science of Reading?

The five pillars of reading instruction are:

  • Phonemic awareness: hearing the individual sounds in spoken words
  • Phonics: connecting those sounds to letters and letter combinations
  • Fluency: reading accurately and smoothly
  • Vocabulary: knowing what words mean
  • Comprehension: understanding what you read

Experts have clearly defined the progression. Kids first learn phonological awareness: the smallest sound units, or phonemes, in spoken words. Then phonics: how those phonemes map to letters. Together, that's phonological awareness: knowing how letters and letter combinations sound out loud. That's what enables decoding, sounding out, and reading a printed word.

Get this foundation right, and fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension will follow. Skip it, and students fall behind, often permanently.

The evidence is unambiguous on this point. John Hattie and Shirley Clarke found that phonics instruction has a bigger impact on student achievement than almost any other reading intervention.

Science of Reading Pillar: Phonemic awareness

Before students connect sounds to letters, they need to hear and work with the sounds in spoken language. Phonological awareness includes hearing, identifying, and manipulating larger and smaller parts of oral language, including words, syllables, onset and rime, and individual sounds.

Students generally find it easier to work with larger units of sound before moving to smaller units such as phonemes. Phonemic awareness focuses specifically on individual sounds. Students learn to identify sounds in words, including beginning, middle, and ending sounds.

They also learn to blend individual sounds to form words, segment words into separate sounds, and manipulate sounds by adding, deleting, or substituting them to create new words. These oral language skills provide an important foundation for decoding and spelling and prepare students to connect sounds to print through phonics.

Learning to read isn't just recognizing words. It's understanding how letters and sounds relate to each other. That's the heart of phonics, and it's what lets students decode written language and become independent readers.

Strong phonics instruction follows a logical progression. Students start with print awareness: how books work, how text is organized, and how print carries meaning. From there, they build familiarity with sight words, high-frequency words that show up constantly in reading and rarely follow standard phonetic patterns.

As learners advance, they develop alphabetics and decoding skills, connecting sounds to letters and letter combinations so they can sound out unfamiliar words with confidence. Research shows these skills are among the strongest predictors of future reading success. Students also learn word analysis, breaking words into parts like prefixes and suffixes, which builds vocabulary and deepens comprehension.

When students understand how sounds and letters work together, they get the tools to read unfamiliar words and build real fluency.

Science of Reading Pillar: Fluency

Fluency is about more than reading fast. It's reading with speed, accuracy, and expression, and it bridges word recognition and real understanding. Without fluency, students spend so much energy decoding that comprehension suffers.

Many educators know fluency through reading-rate assessments, which measure how many words a student reads correctly in one minute. These checks are useful for spotting where students need support, but strong fluency instruction goes beyond speed. Accuracy and comprehension matter just as much.

Prosody is another key piece: the rhythm, phrasing, and expression students bring to reading aloud. As word recognition becomes automatic, students can focus less on decoding and more on meaning. They also learn to use punctuation, like commas, quotation marks, question marks, and exclamation points, to bring text to life and support understanding.

Science of Reading Pillar: Vocabulary

A strong vocabulary does more than help students define words. It helps them make sense of what they read. Vocabulary bridges foundational reading skills and comprehension, letting students engage with increasingly complex texts and ideas.

Vocabulary growth and reading development reinforce each other. The more students read, the more words they encounter. The more words they know, the easier new texts become. Effective vocabulary instruction goes beyond memorization. It gets students actively engaging with words, understanding meaning in context, and connecting related concepts.

One way students build vocabulary is by sorting words into categories, which helps them see relationships between ideas. Another is morphology: understanding meaningful word parts like prefixes, suffixes, and roots. When students learn how these parts work together, they're better equipped to figure out unfamiliar words on their own.

Students also learn to use context clues, looking at surrounding words and sentences to infer meaning. This becomes especially valuable as they hit more challenging academic texts across subjects.

Science of Reading Pillar: Comprehension

Reading isn't just recognizing words on a page. It's making meaning from them. Comprehension is the goal of reading: it lets students understand ideas, connect new information to what they already know, think critically, and apply what they've learned.

Strong comprehension doesn't develop by chance. Effective instruction teaches students to actively engage with text through strategies like predicting, questioning, summarizing, and identifying key ideas. These approaches push students to think past the words themselves and focus on deeper meaning. Background knowledge, vocabulary, and regular reading practice all strengthen comprehension too.

Engagement matters just as much. When students care about what they're reading, they stay focused, retain more, and strengthen connections.
