FAQs: What you need to know

What are the federal accessibility requirements for schools and districts?
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued guidance indicating that districts are expected to ensure their digital content aligns with WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards across learning platforms, assessments, and instructional tools. While the technical standards are now official, compliance deadlines have been extended. WCAG 2.2 AA is the standard for digital accessibility, based on four principles (POUR): • Perceivable – Content can be seen or heard • Operable – Interfaces are navigable (including by keyboard) • Understandable – Content and navigation are clear and predictable • Robust – Compatible with assistive technologies like screen readers
How is Edmentum supporting accessibility and compliance?
Accessibility has been a longstanding priority at Edmentum. We continue to invest in accessible design, ongoing evaluation, and product improvements to support diverse learners. We are also continuing to enhance our platform to further align with evolving accessibility expectations and to support districts in their own accessibility efforts.
What accessibility improvements are included in Edmentum programs?
Recent enhancements focus on key areas aligned to WCAG standards: • Keyboard Navigation Many core workflows, lessons, and assessments are designed to support keyboard navigation, supporting students who cannot use a mouse. • Screen Reader Compatibility Our programs are designed to work with commonly used screen readers, supporting access for users who are deafblind, blind, or have low vision, including those who use assistive technologies such as refreshable Braille displays, to access and interact with content. • Color Contrast Improvements Visual design updates aim to improve the clarity of text, buttons, and instructional elements for users with low vision or color vision differences.
What is a VPAT, and why does it matter?
A VPAT (Voluntary Product Accessibility Template), or Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR), provides a detailed, criterion-level view of how a product aligns with accessibility standards. It’s not a certification—it’s a transparent, structured way for districts to evaluate accessibility and make informed decisions. Edmentum provides VPATs to help districts evaluate accessibility with confidence and clarity. Accessibility standards continue to evolve, and accessibility conformance may vary by product, feature, configuration, and assistive technology.
How does Edmentum support districts on their accessibility journey?
We support districts by providing: • Transparent accessibility documentation, including VPATs • Ongoing product enhancements aligned to WCAG standards • Resources to help inform local evaluation and implementation Our goal is simple: help districts deliver inclusive learning experiences while they address their own compliance responsibilities.
